Aichel Nateras, MD

Aichel Nateras was born and raised in Ensenada, Mexico. While growing up in a family already involved in the medical field, having a mother who is an OR nurse and a father who is an OBGYN, she knew she wanted to be a doctor since was always fascinated by the science of the body and the ability to help others moved her and encouraged her to become a physician.

Aichel finished medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California in Tijuana, Mexico and always dreamed of becoming a doctor in the US to be able to help Latino communities that struggle with language limitations while seeking healthcare.

Soon after graduating Medical school, she was accepted in the UCLA International Medical Graduate Program in Santa Monica, CA. Having English as a second language, this was not an easy task. Immersing in a new culture and moving to Los Angeles to fulfill her dream of becoming a Family Medicine resident in the USA was her greatest goal yet. After studying long hours to revalidate her medical degree in the US and sacrificing time away from family and friends, she, thankfully, matched in San Diego. She is now a third year Family Medicine Resident at Family Health Centers of San Diego in the City Heights community.

She chose Family Medicine since it provides the possibility of seeing patients of all ages and all genders, being able to treat patients from head to toe and from the body, mind and soul. The opportunity of developing long lasting and fulfilling relationships with her patients is a great reward.

As a proud Mexican, representing the Latino community, she acknowledges Latinos are under-represented in the medical field in the US, and she is eager to serve as an example of “Sí se puede!” (Yes we can!).

Being able to see the faces of happiness and relief her patients have when they realize they have a doctor that speaks their own language and understands their culture, reminds her everyday why she decided to embark the journey of becoming a physician in the US.
